About FNHL

Far North Holdings Ltd (FNHL) is wholly owned by the Far North District Council of New Zealand and is an entity referred to as a Council Controlled Trading Organisation under the Local Government Act 2002. It is registered under the Companies Act 1993.

Far North District Council established Far North Holdings Limited in 1997 to act as a vehicle for delivery of the Council's commercial activities and has control through the appointment of the Board and its report processes. FNHL is directed through it's Statement of Intent which is negotiated annually with its shareholder (FNDC).

FNHL is transparent - its Annual Report and Statutory Statement of Intent are public documents obtainable in the libraries and on this website. It also reports quarterly to Far North District Council in open forum.

Through providing alternative income streams - it is estimated that FNDC general rates would have been approximately 4% per annum higher each year over the last 10 years without this income.

During the past 10 years, 100% of FNHL's trading surplus has either been distributed to Far North District Council or reinvested in property and infrastructure within the Far North District.

FNHL activities have supported the creation of approx. 64 new jobs in Opua through its developments in the area.

FNHL has secured the visits of cruise ships by creating Waitangi Wharf as a Secure Port Facility (ISPS).

An average of 437 overseas cruising yachts per year enter NZ through the free Port of Entry provided by FNHL at Opua.

Through Far North District Council investment and FNHL management as airport authority, services at the Kaitaia airport have increased to two flights each weekday.

FNHL has led the marina industry in New Zealand in raising environmental standards, (for example through the creation and management of non discharge areas).

FNHL has assisted Far North District Council to provide recreational maritime facilities across the district; for example - Taipa Boat Ramp jetty, Kerikeri Stone Store Wharf pontoon, Waipapa Landing pontoon, Waitangi Boat Ramp parking upgrade and Hokianga facilities upgrades.
