Just a few months on from its official opening, the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club is already proving to be a standout addition to Opua and the wider boating community.
The opening itself marked a significant moment for the region, with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon officially cutting the ribbon alongside key members of the community, including representatives from local iwi Ngāti Manu, Kelvin Davis and Judge Greg Davis - a strong reflection of the wide support behind the project.
Set on the water’s edge at Bay of Islands Marina, the new clubrooms offer a front-row seat to marina life, with sweeping views across the harbour and vessels coming and going throughout the day. It’s a location that captures the essence of Opua - welcoming, relaxed and deeply connected to the boating lifestyle.

Since opening day, the club has seen strong momentum, with consistent support from both locals and visitors. What was envisioned as a place to connect has quickly come to life - now a busy, vibrant hub that reflects the spirit of the Bay of Islands.
The calendar has been packed, with a steady run of fishing tournaments, local events and well-attended members’ nights. The club has also fast become a go-to venue for special occasions, offering a unique waterfront setting that continues to draw people in.

Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. From the atmosphere to the setting, the clubrooms are being embraced as a place to gather, celebrate and share in the lifestyle that makes Opua so special.
Looking ahead, there are already plans to build on this momentum. An extended outdoor area, complete with a covered marquee, is in the pipeline. This will create a flexible new space for both the club and wider community to enjoy - supporting larger events, year-round use and adding to what is quickly becoming a key destination within the marina.
With high-profile events also on the horizon
- including the 2027 CMP Billfish Classic, which will be hosted by the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club and held in Opua for the first time - the stage is set for even further growth.
As the owner and operator of Bay of Islands Marina, Far North Holdings is proud to see the continued success of the Swordfish Club and the positive impact it is already having within the marina precinct.
The club adds to the strength of the wider offering in Opua, supporting both community connection and regional visitation. It’s a strong start for the Swordfish Club and a clear sign of the role it will continue to play as a central hub for the community and visitors alike.
