Far North Holdings welcomes confirmation that the 2026 Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Challenge has secured Government backing through the $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package.

This national investment is designed to strengthen regional economies, increase visitor numbers and deliver lasting benefits for communities across New Zealand. For the Far North, it represents strong endorsement of Ōpua and the Bay of Islands as a destination capable of hosting internationally recognised maritime events.

Far North Holdings owns and operates Bay of Islands Marina in Ōpua, a key marine hub for the region and the host location for the race fleet in the lead-up to the event.

Investment Supporting Regional Growth

The Solo Trans-Tasman Challenge was included in the latest funding round following an application to the Government Tourism Boost Events Fund by Julie Kidman.

Events supported through the programme run from May to December and are expected to generate measurable economic activity nationwide. Increased promotion and profile for the race will help attract competitors and visitors, with positive flow-on effects for accommodation, hospitality, marine services and tourism operators throughout the region.

A Historic First for Ōpua

In a milestone development, the 15th edition of the Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Challenge will start in Ōpua on 30 May 2026 — the first time the event has begun here. Solo sailors will depart on a 1,200 nautical mile journey across the Tasman Sea to Southport on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

The Opua Cruising Club has been named Organising Authority for the 2026 race, continuing the legacy of the longest-running single-handed ocean race in the Southern Hemisphere.

Race vessels will berth at Bay of Islands Marina in the lead-up, while preparing for the crossing. The marina precinct is expected to become a focal point of pre-race activity.

With funding support confirmed and planning well underway, the event is set to deliver economic stimulus, regional visibility and community pride — positioning Ōpua firmly on the international sailing stage.
